Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena, kinta'nija, -- April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) also known as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Her contribution to fashion and music made Selena the "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most well-known performers of the Mexican-American community of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" according to Latin albums and Latin charts of music. Her attire have earned her the moniker "Tejano Madonna". Her clothes choices also makes her one of the top Latin artists. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was regularly dismissed and had to be denied bookings at various venues in Texas for performing Tejano music, a genre of music that is dominated by males. After winning the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she began to gain popularity. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album self-titled in the same year. During that time, her brother became her principal music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) that peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album's success in the commercial market led music critics to call it the "breakthrough" record of her musical career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her most loved hit song. Live! (1993) was awarded Best American/Mexican album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to be awarded this distinction. In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the best-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being responsible for Tejano music's first commercially viable era because it became one the most sought-after Latin music subgenres of the time.
